Perhaps saying that for the past 10 years we have called on Authentic Landscaping anytime we needed any landscaping, interlocking, or sodding work done around our house is enough. Ten years ago Jalal did a wonderful front yard makeover for our adjacent neighbours . The following spring he redid their backyard landscaping. We admired the quality of his workmanship and professionalism of his crew at that time and were pleased to finally contract him for a large makeover project of our own this spring.
Jalal met with us on several occasions to work out the design details for a new front entrance and a widened driveway and then completed the project masterfully. He is a skilled stone mason, overseeing all the work and cutting and fitting the massive stone blocks with precision. When the stonework was complete Jalal agreed that a short addition to the retaining wall would be a better fit for our landscaping and he willingly retrieved the necessary materials to make the adjustments himself, after sending home his crew on a Friday afternoon. I feel qualified to pass judgement on the work done by Authentic.  I had four quotes for interlock on the driveway, and did not choose to go with Authentic.  My mistake.  I was impressed with the owner of the company that I chose… but the owner only  showed up on site to collect cheques.  The guy that I thought would be doing the work sent in the B- team.  They were kids that cared more about finishing the job quickly than the quality of the job.  As a result, I felt forced to make a website documenting all of the sloppy shortcomings of the job that I was left with.

A few years later, we wanted a back yard patio, This time I chose to go with Authentic.  This was because I understood that Jalal would continually be on site.  This implied to me that Jalal would ensure that the work would be up to his standards.  (It is like choosing a restaurant… it is not the name of the restaurant, but rather the head chef that is primarily responsible for your experience.)

Significantly, on one occasion I was watching Jalal from inside the house, when he didn’t know I was watching him.  He was fitting a paving stone into place.  It almost fit.  He could have made the adjacent paving stones go cock-eyed to make it fit.  It would save time.   But he chose to shave some more rock off of the paving stone.  It still didn’t fit.  So he shaved still more rock off of the stone.   I suggest that that is the attention to detail that one can anticipate from Jalal.  I was pleased to be continually consulted on work in progress, and was pleased with the extra aspects of the job that Jalal cheerfully performed.

We contacted Authentic Landscaping to design the front entrance of our home. We needed some serious work done in order to define the area, which was nothing more than a set of concrete stairs with its rusted rebar showing. We are very happy to recommend Jalal and Authentic Landscaping for the work they did for us over several weeks this summer and fall. We are thrilled with the end results and have had many favourable comments even from passers-by.
Last fall we talked with Jalal about our ideas, and he made some measurements and gave us suggestions. In the spring he came back and confirmed everything. Because I didn’t want to toss our old stones from the front walk into the landfill, he suggested how he could incorporate them into our backyard and also advised putting borders around my gardens.
Jalal was organized and efficient. He took great care to inconvenience us as little as possible, making sure that we always had one door available. This was especially important to us because we have 3 dogs who wanted access to the back yard. Even though the workers had to go back and forth, they always made sure the gate was shut.
Every morning they were here bright and early. They worked from dawn till dusk. I am glad that we were here to watch. Jalal patiently described what he was doing, and I was able to see how much work was involved. And Jalal was precise. He re-worked one of the paths because he didn’t think it was just right. I also saw him turn stones over to get the best fit. He made sure at each stage that we were happy before going on and was conscious and careful to save my plants that were already in the soil by moving them to a safe resting spot until their new home was ready. He gave suggestions about colour and curves, but left the final decisions up to us. Even as he worked he was willing to adjust things as we saw the evolution. Good soil that he dug up, he placed in a spot so we could use it later. This was more work for him, but saved us and the landfill a lot.
We were so happy with the walkways and the gardens that we asked him to return in the fall and re-sod our front lawn. Again he appeared on time and efficiently completed that.
Not only are we thrilled with the work, but we were pleased with all the workers. They were enthusiastic, friendly, and cheerful. Everyone made a constant attempt to inconvenience us as little as possible. It was a joy to have them around. The clean-up was exceptional.
And the charges were very reasonable. Everything was itemized and did not change during the process even though some modifications were made.
It was a pleasure to watch someone who took such pride in his work and a team that worked so hard and happily.
So in all the elements—quick estimate, planning, expertise (about materials, design, colour and trends), workmanship, clean-up, and value, the Authentic team was superb. They were pleasant to have on site and communicated well at every new stage to make sure there were no misunderstandings. .

“In late summer 2008, we got into a landscaping project with a lot of trepidation and only after Artistic Landscape (where we bought supplies from) and other customers recommended Jalal to us as we were looking for a contractor. It’s hard enough these days to find competent trades people, who know their craft and care as much about the final product as the customer – let alone finding one who is also conscientious and dependable, and one who is pleasant to work with and prepared to “deal with a smile” with the finicky idiosyncrasies of his customers. Our project was a patio with interlock which also involved replacing old stones that were there with grass in the surrounding area. We wanted the patio to be “perfect” – with a naturally curving perimeter, of the right color and paver size to work well with the pool and other things around it, and with final dimensions “to be determined” as the project took shape. There were also some pesky technical problems, such as getting around trees and other structures and, more important, achieving just the right slope so rain water would drain away from the 320 sq. ft patio into the surrounding grass. We got the project at the high quality we wanted, on time, and on budget. Of special value to us, considering our experiences with other trades people (which aren’t unique, judging from the horror stories we hear from friends), Jalal was always easy to find, prepared to accommodate our design changes throughout, and most important, a real pleasure to deal with. All in all, our initial worries turned into a real fun experience with a great outcome.
